What If Jay Z Never Returned To Rap After Retirement? (By TonyBeenChi)

Shawn Carter better known as ‘Jay z’ is a musical legend. I of course would have told you this in 1998. But i was 3-4 years ahead of mainstream hip hop critics who considered him a hip hop legend after the release of “The Blueprint” in 2001. And i can’t pinpoint the exact time when in general mainstream music began considering him a musical legend, but it was definitely after 2001, i know that much.

Maybe after “The Black Album” was released in 2003.But again i would’ve told you this in 1998. Speaking of “The Black Album” that was originally supposed to be Jay z’s final album. (Thank the good lord that it wasn’t). But it was supposed to be.

By the time of “The Black Album” recordings, Jay z was already named as the “King of rap” because of all of the things he had accomplished in rap between 1996-2003. So he was well within his rights in the position to “leave out on top”. I don’t know maybe he felt that he had told his story and it was time to move on in life. But we soon found out that the “Jay Z story” was far from done being told.

We were now able to hear about his new life, the corporate life of Jay Z. During his time off from recording albums he worked as not only an entrepreneur, but also as the president of Def Jam. I say time off from recording albums because, he never actually, well not for a good amount of time stopped recording features. I can just imagine what it was like being the best rapper alive, while working as a president of a record label.

And hearing all kinds of beats that instantly sparks your creativity, while fighting to remain “retired” from rapping. We all should have known that this “retirement” that he spoke of wasn’t going to last. So since Jay Z officially returned to recording albums, He has since released 5 albums. 4 solo albums and 1 collab album.
Which brings me to the topic of this article “ What if Jay Z never came out of rap retirement”.

The simple answer is hip hop would not be the same. Hip hop needed Jay z to return. Hip hop has never seen anything like Jay Z, the most successful longest tenured rapper who has spent many more years than any other rapper ever on top of the game.
And Hip Hop needed to see someone pull off what Jay Z has done. And the most major thing he has did as a hip hop artist since coming out out retirement, is successfully convert is music from the point of view of a successful street hustler, who defied all odds and made his mark on hip hop. To the point of view of a successful corporate business man who came from nothing, who then became the most successful rap artist. And now a very successful corporate executive.

While still at least two separate years as post retirement Jay, being named best rapper. Hip hop needed to see this. Hip hop may never see anyone pull something like this off again. But Jay Z has proven it can be done.
